September 30 Papeete, Tahiti

The ship docked at 8:00 AM and after a quick bit of breakfast we walked ashore, looking for an adventurous day. We were greeted with a lovely and typical Tahitian welcome!

We did not book a ship excursion, choosing to chance it on our own. We decided to find a beach, see what the rest of the day would bring.

We found a taxi cab ($25) to take us down the highway about 10 minutes to a white sandy beach. He dropped us at the Intercontinental Hotel, a lovely 4 star hotel, so we wandered in acting like we owned the place and strolled around the grounds and down to the pool and the lagoon. It was absolutely beautiful!!

We sat by the lagoon for awhile, just taking in the natural beauty of the place, dabbled our feet in the water, enjoyed the fish and coral life in the lagoon and relaxed. After about an hour, we decided to swim in the very large pool, and spent a couple of hours lounging beside the pool.

We met another couple from the ship who told us that they had paid $70 per person for a day pass at the hotel!! Oops!! Who knew??? We just figured it was open to anyone. Big mistake, big savings! So we hung out for another hour and when we had had enough sun and relaxation we took a cab back to the port.

We wandered around through the shops a bit ...

and then walked back onto the ship...a wonderful day in Papeete, Tahiti (pronounced ‘papa-etay’, meaning ‘water basket’).

View from the ship’s deck; there’s a giant yacht here called the Ethereal. If you are interested in an amazing ship with a history, google it!

Might want to come back here and stay for a few days, it was that good!!

After a late lunch we cleaned up a bit and then headed to the theatre to watch the movie ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’. We had both seen it before but it’s the kind of movie you can see over and over, enjoying the story and the music!

And then it was time for dinner (oh yes, another meal!) in the BLU Restaurant. And again, we were not disappointed with our crab cocktail, split pea soup, tender rib eye steak and creme brûlée. We have become ‘friends’ with some of the restaurant staff, so it’s like eating with family! Most enjoyable.

In the theatre was a Cultural Experience with Tahitian Folklore Show: ‘Mana-The Spirit of Tahiti’ featuring Tahitian dancers and music. It was quite entertaining, and played to a full house. There was not an empty chair and people were standing 4 deep. Wow!

The ship sailed at 9:00 PM, where we enjoyed the poolside sail away party and music for a while, then hit a few minutes of the Celebrity Showtime with Bodane Hatten, a entertaining magician and comedian. Very good entertainment!

And after a full day, we retired to our room, sleep came quickly and we were grateful for an amazing day in Tahiti! More to come....Carol on the go!
