October 15 Sydney, Australia, one cruise ends, another one begins!

October 15 Sydney, Australia

The ship docked early and we enjoyed a beautiful sunrise, as the sun came up over the Opera House. Our ship is docked in the harbour right beside the opera house, so we see it right off our deck! It’s amazing!!

We were off the ship at 8:30 AM, ready to explore Sydney. Our first stop was the tourist kiosk near the ship. After some discussion we purchased an ‘I Venture’ card for $95 each, which entitles us to 5 of the top attractions in Sydney. Given that the attractions run from $45 to $70 each, it is a good deal. Our next task was to purchase a SIM card for my phone; this took a bit of work as the tourist kiosk’s SIM card didn’t work in my phone, so we walked several blocks to find a phone store to get my SIM card...so for $30 I have unlimited phone calls, texts and 20GB of data. It’s a much better deal than purchasing the ship’s wifi which is expensive.

And then we were off - starting with the Royal Botanic Garden which is right next to the harbour, and beautiful. Although we walked for over half an hour here, we only saw a fraction of the Garden, it’s massive!

Next stop was the Opera House, one of the top attractions covered by our I Venture card. We took a one hour guided tour which took us inside two of the many theatres. We were lucky to have the Sydney Philharmonic Orchestra rehearsing in one of the theatres, so we could hear the incredible acoustics. The inside of the theatres is all wood, which is not only beautiful, but provides excellent acoustics, too. We climbed about a thousand steps, too! (Actually our steps for today were over 17,000! Gives you an idea of how much we walked!)

We went back to the ship for lunch and a bit of a rest, and then came back to the city and walked a bit more.

Upon our return to the ship we watched the sun set, had a delicious meal in the dining room, and visited with some of the new people who have joined this cruise.

It was an early night, did a bit of blogging and then fell into a sound sleep. That’s a wrap on the day, more to come....Carol on the go!
