October 20 and 21 Cairns, Australia

The ship docked on October 20 at Cairns, Australia...actually the ship was anchored near Yorkey’s Knob, a small town 15 miles north of Cairns. We were booked on a day trip by boat to a platform anchored in the Great Barrier Reef to snorkel!

The boat picked us up at the ship and we travelled about an hour and a half to reach the platform. Transport boat:

The platform is like a large floating barge, equipped with snorkel and dive equipment and all things necessary for these activities. Platform and smaller dock:

We were outfitted with snorkelling equipment and suits and jumped into the water.

It was an experience beyond your imagination! The calm water, the clear sunny skies, the brilliant colours and variety of the corals and the abundant marine life were SO SO incredible. We snorkelled for about 2 hours, until we were exhausted!

What really surprised us about the Reef, is that coral is an animal, not a plant. It is one of the seven natural wonders of the world and stretches more than 2900 kilometres. Even though the tour was stupid expensive (about $350), it was worth it for this amazing experience. The photos don’t do it justice because we didn’t have an underwater camera so these were taken from the glass bottomed boat we used after our snorkeling.

Then we got out of the water, dried off, had a delicious buffet lunch and were entertained by one of the naturalists. He is certified to actually touch the choral / marine life and brought them onto the ship. He gave us a hands on lesson on the choral and explained how the Reef is protected and regenerating. Very interesting!

After several hours on the platform we boarded the boat for the ride back to the ship.
We cleaned up, went to the BLU Restaurant for dinner and then went to the evening show. It featured Peter Cousens, an opera singer. He was fabulous and we stayed for the whole show. Wow, can this fellow sing!

And then it was an early bedtime, as we were exhausted from the snorkelling experience! A dream come true!

October 21 Cairns, Australia

The ship remained anchored near Cairns overnight. In the morning we took the tender to the dock at Yorkey’s Knob and spent a couple of hours at the Boat Club. There really wasn’t much to do at this stop and we didn’t feel like taking a bus ride to Cairns, so we just used the wifi at the Boat Club, took a couple photos with the stuffies for the grandkids, and then returned to the ship where we did some laundry, read and relaxed.

Sharon took a helicopter ride over the Reef and said it was awesome! Theses are her photos.

It was Chic Night, which is a ‘dress up’ evening so we put on our bling and went to dinner, another delicious meal! (I really hope my clothes will fit for the trip home!).

And here is Igor with us, he’s one of the terrific bartenders at the Martini Bar! Great fellow!

The evening show was in the Sky Lounge, and featured the ship’s cast. It was a lively colourful show with songs from the 40’s.

And that’s a wrap on the two days at Cairns! More to come, Carol on the go
